DocLab Shorts 24 Nov at 19:45
A program of short stories that would never have existed without the internet.
Masterclass: Errol Morris
Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris discusses his work.
One of the main guests of IDFA 2015 is director Errol Morris. For the main festival program, he selected his Documentary Top 10, which are all screening during the festival, as well as a selection of Morris’ own documentary work.
During his masterclass, which is open to both the general festival audience and DocLab Academy participants, Morris will talk with film theorist Bill Nichols about his own films and the insights offered by his Top 10 selection. The wide-ranging discussion will touch upon the role of interviews, which play an important role in Morris’s work and are handled in different ways by the filmmakers he’s chosen.
After studying history and philosophy, Morris (New York, 1948) made his documentary debut in 1978 with Gates of Heaven. His oeuvre is characterized by an essayistic style – he probes and dissects both the story and the people telling it with incredible precision and a razor-sharp eye for detail. A major factor in his approach is the ‘interrotron’, a device he invented himself that allows the subject of an interview to look straight into the camera, simultaneously addressing both Morris and the viewer of the film.
During the DocLab Interactive Conference, Morris will also make an appearance in a short interview by Jason Spingarn Koff (Netflix).
