Julia Irwin

Brooklyn-based new media artist, researcher and filmmaker.

Julia Irwin is a Brooklyn-based new media artist, researcher and filmmaker. Drawing on a background in anthropology, her work aims to deconstruct the human experience, often treating the human body as a form of media in and of itself. She is a collector of stories and a hacker of cameras, using experimental imaging and video techniques, game engines and digital fabrication bots to create visual ethnographies about scars, intimacy, surrogacy and self-perception.

Julia is currently a Research Fellow at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) where she will be adjunct faculty in the fall. Her research focuses on emerging cinematic techniques for virtual reality filmmaking and documentary. Julia has taught workshops internationally on transmedia non-fiction storytelling. Her projects have been featured in Fast Company, the Huffington Post, Gizmodo and Al Jazeera America.
