A rudimentary chatbot breathes new life into La cucina futurista (Futurist Cooking) (1932) by translating dreams of the future into new recipes and table rituals.

La cucina futurista (Futurist Cooking), published in 1932 by the Italian poet Filippo Marinetti, was a manifesto in the guise of a culinary publication. The futurists visualized a high-tech future dominated by motorized speed and masculine energy. Pasta was for weaklings, Marinetti believed. Instead he proposed scientifically based cooking involving ozonizers and chemical processes to preserve vitamins. It was a sort of molecular gastronomy avant la lettre, but more extreme.

We now live in the technological society the futurists were striving for, but it’s quite different from what they imagined. This was the inspiration for artists Klasien van de Zandschulp and Emilie Baltz to breathe new life into futuristic cooking. A rudimentary chatbot invites visitors to share their dreams and fears about the future, and uses them as a basis to conceive recipes. Comparable to the revolution in Italian food culture advocated by Marinetti, new rituals and recipes are thus created for the digital age.
