Hive Mind Breakout

A collaborative ‘hive mind’ experiment using ping pong paddles.

Inspired by Rachel and Loren Carpenter’s 1991 experiment, the DocLab Live audience collectively control a virtual ping pong paddle in a video game. The audience use a ping pong paddle that had been left under their seats, and by flipping between a red and green side, can direct the white dot bouncing up and down on the screen. One colour only counts or one vote in the game. To succeed, the audience needs to collaboratively decide which colour to flip to and control the direction of the paddle.
