What a way to kick off IDFA DocLab 09: a succulent audio-visual history of panoramic projection – by none other than main man Jeffrey Shaw. Along the way we traversed the birth of interactive story-telling, happed upon that pesky Augmented Reality thing, and took a trip to Hampi India to see our favourite deities come to animated life. Shaw’s captivating journey was followed by a presentation of the crowd-sourced remake of Man With a Movie Camera (a ubiquitous gem of Russian cinema anno 1929 – for those who did not attend film academy). Each shot of this haunting silent classic has been re-created by a member of video artist Perry Bard‘s Internet audience, pitting the very birth of cinema against its digital rebirth. We gather there are some shots that still need re-creating, and prompt YOU to give it a shot (drumroll please).
