A locative documentary project marking IDFA’s move to Rembrandt Square

During the 10 days of IDFA, the square will become the new home of creative documentary filmmaking. But what was life like on and around the square before IDFA? Throughout the years, professional and amateur photographers captured wonderful images and some of these are still available at the Amsterdam City Archive.
Documentary filmmaker Joeri Bleumer was inspired to use this material as a starting point for a locative documentary project marking IDFA’s move to Rembrandt Square. On the IDFA website, Bleumer presents a map in which a selection of archival photographs can be seen, depicting everyday life on Rembrandt Square. Clicking on the photo will set the image in motion, revealing a present-day documentary impression of life on and around the Rembrandt Square. All new footage was shot on 8mm only a few days before IDFA 2007.
